Be Where Developers Are: WeAreDevelopers Survey Unveils Key Insights into the Tech Workforce

WeAreDevelopers, Europe’s leading career platform for developers, has just released its Developer Survey 2024. This year’s comprehensive report, titled “#Wanted and #Misunderstood,” draws from the insights of over 1,200 developers and 150 HR professionals across Europe, providing a deep dive into the ever-evolving landscape of the tech industry.

Rudi Bauer, Managing Director at WeAreDevelopers commented: "With this survey, our goal was to provide both HR teams and developers with the opportunity to share the challenges and concerns they are currently facing. By interconnecting the viewpoints of these two groups, we were able to demonstrate that, while their perspectives may differ, ultimately both sides care about the same key issues. Through our platform, we strive to create a more collaborative and understanding relationship between developers and companies, ensuring that both work together towards common goals."

The 2024 survey covers crucial topics such as work-life balance, recruitment practices, career advancement, sustainability & mental health, workplace culture as well as DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion). Key findings highlight developers' preferences and challenges in the workplace, revealing that:

  • 70% of tech professionals identify as passive candidates - those not actively seeking jobs but who are open to opportunities. Traditional job postings therefore only reach 6% of tech talents, who are actively job hunting, highlighting the need for companies to focus on community-based hiring and to actively engage with developer communities to access a broader talent pool.
  • A striking 80% of developers prioritize upskilling opportunities within their current roles over seeking new employment.
  • 60% of developers emphasize the importance of salary transparency in job postings, significantly influencing their interest in new job opportunities.
  • Sustainability and mental health have emerged as pivotal concerns, with developers increasingly seeking workplaces that align with their values and support their well-being.

The findings of our 2024 Developer Survey clearly indicate that traditional recruitment methods are no longer sufficient in reaching the vast majority of tech talent.” Sead Ahmetovic, CEO of WeAreDevelopers, emphasized. “As a result, it is crucial that organizations reevaluate their strategies for engaging with developers. Companies need to meet developers where they are, engaging directly with the community to tap into the full spectrum of talent. At WeAreDevelopers, we’re committed to fostering this direct engagement by bridging the gap between companies and developers, ensuring that together, we can build a future where we both thrive.”
