Job description

The IT Infrastructure and Operations department at the New York Public Library (NYPL) is responsible for the engineering, implementation, administration, and support of complex technical solutions delivering mission-critical services to NYPL staff and patrons. The team provides technical expertise for core IT products, including Networking, Telecommunications, Cloud Computing, Desktop Engineering, Cybersecurity, and business-facing applications. The Junior Network Engineer supports the implementation, operation, monitoring, and maintenance of NYPL’s network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, wireless, and Internet. Working closely with senior engineers, service providers, and internal technology teams, this role assists with troubleshooting, incident response, documentation, and infrastructure projects to ensure secure, reliable, and high-performing connectivity across all NYPL locations. Some expectations for this role are that within: 1 month, this person will:

  • Become familiar with NYPL IT practices, teams, and roles
  • Gain a working understanding of existing network infrastructure services including network monitoring, ticketing, and change management tools
  • Build relationships with Network Engineering leadership, MSP contacts, and operational partners
  • Review existing network diagrams, configurations, and documentation

3 months, this person will:

  • Assume day-to-day ownership of assigned network engineering services
  • Support network-related incidents and changes with increasing independence
  • Begin contributing to network engineering activities at a foundational level
  • Participate actively in change management and operational reviews

6 months and beyond, this person will:

  • Serve as a trusted technical resource for assigned network infrastructure and services
  • Demonstrate growing competency in network engineering fundamentals
  • Contribute to network modernization initiatives
  • Support improved service reliability, documentation, and vendor coordination

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation, operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of NYPL’s network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, wireless, Internet, and telecommunications services
  • Assist with the installation, configuration, testing, and maintenance of network hardware and connectivity services
  • Collaborate with Network Engineering on network deployments, infrastructure upgrades, and technology rollouts
  • Participate in change control, incident response, and maintenance activities related to network services
  • Assist with vendor coordination, service reviews, and technical assessments
  • Monitor network performance, availability, and capacity using network management and monitoring tools
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, network diagrams, inventories, and operational runbooks
  • Participate in the Network Engineering on-call rotation and assist with after-hours maintenance activities and incident response as needed

  • Travel to NYPL sites as needed

  • Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm; available on-call after hours and weekends required
  • Hybrid schedule; 3 days on-site and 2 days remote as workload permits

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field required or 2+ years of related field experience

Required Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of experience supporting network infrastructure in an enterprise environment
  • Experience working with vendors or managed service providers, * Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical issues and document solutions
  • Exposure to enterprise networking concepts such as routing, switching, and VLANs
  • Strong understanding of network engineering fundamentals
  • Foundational knowledge of enterprise networking concepts
  • Ability to work effectively with vendors and service providers
  • Strong documentation and communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to grow network engineering skills over time
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, cross-functional IT environment
