Cloud as the new mainframe: why the cloud hype does not reflect the dev reality
Gerta Sheganaku & Waldemar Hummer - a year ago
The adoption of cloud has been on the rise for over a decade, and for good reasons: Cloud offers unprecedented execution flexibility, scalability and state-of-the-art security, making it an attractive option for businesses of all sizes. However, while the hype around cloud is mainly based on its advantage in managing execution workloads, the reality of cloud devs is all too often neglected. Developing against the cloud comes with drawbacks: due to the closed source nature of Cloud Providers, developers have to give up control over their development environments, leading to slow and tedious feedback loops with hard to debug application code. The dependency on the cloud provider's infrastructure for every single change during the dev and test cycle can be time-consuming, expensive, and error-prone. In this talk, we will discuss ways to address these issues, including how local development platforms can give developers back control when developing and testing modern cloud apps.
