Every developer needs a portfolio… of some sort.

Whether it’s an all-singing all-dancing portfolio page, a blog, or a simple links page, it’s important to let others know what you have done, what you can do, and how they can contact you.

A portfolio is also a great way to showcase projects you are proud of, and show off your personality. So, we thought we’d share a few to give you some inspiration each month if you’re thinking about giving your site an update or refresh.

Tim TB

Tim TB's Portfolio

Tim is a Frontend Developer from San Francisco in the US (according to his portfolio, he’s actually the best Developer, but we’ll leave that debate for another day).

Tim’s portfolio has an uncluttered UI, prominently features projects that relate to his Mongolian heritage (a little personality is always a good thing!), features a simple blog page as well as the usual about and contact pages, oh, and it’s open source!

Jordan Cruz-Correa

Jordan Cruz-Correa's Portfolio

Jordan Cruz-Correa is a Developer based out of New York, and his portfolio brilliantly taps into the nostalgia of Windows 98 by letting users play around with a working version of Notepad, explore a recycle bin with fake (nostalgic) files like creed_take_me_higher.mp3 while checking out the usual portfolio-type content like projects and about section.

This kind of portfolio shows off Jordan’s creativity, his ability to design UI elements in a coherent way, and how he can execute a creative idea well, all good traits for potential employers or collaborators to see.

Jesse Zhou

Jesse Zhou's Portfolio

Jesse Zhou really thought outside of the box on this one.

A Management Consultant with experience in a number of creative and tech realms including development, data science and digital art, Jesse had just had to make something different, to reflect with his unique background.

Jesse’s site is a three-dimensional ramen hut that users can navigate around, including a vending machine of projects and a television to watch video projects on the top floor of the building.

This one is a lot of fun, really stands out from the pack, and showcases Jesse’s imagination and quirky style.

Henri Heymans

Henri Heymans' Portfolio

Henri Heymans is a creative developer from France, and his portfolio immediately lets the viewer know that Henri is different to your average developer.

Like Henri himself, his website blends his development skills with his artistic flaire to showcase an interesting collection of projects in engaging and imaginative ways.

Ryan Furrer

Ryan Furrer Portfolio

Ryan Furrer is a frontend developer, streamer and blogger from the US, and we really liked the look of his portfolio for the strong colour scheme, the UI gives the content plenty of space, and Ryan’s personal brand is clear and consistent throughout the site.

It’s perhaps more of a traditional portfolio than some of the others on the list, but it’s a great example of some simple design decisions and a strong understanding of hierarchy can make for a really great, simple portfolio.

Brittany Chaing

Brittany Chiang’s portfolio will often appear on ‘great portfolio developer’ lists, and for a reason. At first glance, it might look simplistic; there’s no imagery, lots of empty space in the sidebar, and is quite text-heavy.

Looking a little more closely and you see lots of details that really make this site a joy to use. There’s a glow effect that follows the cursor, navigation items that highlight when their content scrolls into view, and even a Doctor Who-style time-travel tardis in the bottom-right corner, letting users switch back to older versions.

That’s it for this month!

We hope this gave you some ideas and inspiration for your own personal site, and look forward to seeing how you express your personality through your portfolio soon.

Be sure to share yours on socials, and we might feature yours next month!
